The Freedom of Dependance on God

Episode 30: Dependence on God

Dependence on God is one of the most beautiful realities of the Christian life—and yet one of the hardest to fully embrace. In Episode 30 of In the Light of Truth, we explored the freedom of dependence on God. What it truly means to depend on God, why we struggle with it, and how learning to surrender control transforms the way we live, trust, and respond to life’s uncertainties.

What Does It Mean to Depend on God?

Depending on God is having faith, trust, and hope in Him to supply all our needs. It is believing—not just intellectually, but practically—that God is who He says He is and that He will do what He says He will do.

Philippians 4:19 reminds us of this truth clearly:

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.

God doesn’t promise to meet some of our needs—He promises to meet all of them. But trusting that promise is often where the struggle begins.

The Tension Between Faith and Fear

One of the most honest parts of this conversation was acknowledging that dependence on God doesn’t mean we’ve mastered trust. Fear still creeps in—especially when it comes to finances, provision, timelines, and the unknown.

If you find yourself torn between faith and anxiety, you are not alone. Struggling with trust does not disqualify you from God’s love. It simply reveals the areas where He is inviting you to lean on Him more fully.

Scripture repeatedly tells us to not be afraid. In fact, throughout the book of Joshua, God doesn’t merely suggest courage—He commands it. The call is not to pretend fear doesn’t exist, but to stop letting fear rule our decisions. In Joshua 10:25a, God tells His people:

”Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be strong and courageous.”

God’s Will Is Our Best Case Scenario

So often, our struggle with dependence is rooted in control. We want clarity. We want certainty. We want outcomes to look a certain way. But Scripture reminds us that God’s wisdom far exceeds our own—and His will is always our best case scenario.

Looking at biblical examples like Joseph, Gideon, David, and Jehoshaphat reminds us that God is always at work, even when circumstances look bleak.

In 2 Chronicles 20, God tells His people:

“Do not be afraid…for the battle is not yours but God’s.”

Time and time again, God shows that deliverance, provision, and victory come through His strength, not ours.

Dependence and the Illusion of Control

One of the most common areas where dependence breaks down is finances. While Scripture calls us to be wise and faithful stewards, it also exposes the illusion that money provides security.

Money has never been—and will never be—our provider. God alone is.

Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6 not to worry about what we will eat, drink, or wear, because our Father already knows our needs. Our needs matter—but they were never meant to sit on the throne of our hearts.

True dependence asks hard questions:

  • What am I trusting more than God?

  • What would happen to my faith if everything were taken away?

  • Am I resting in God’s provision or striving for my own sense of control?

What Does Depending on God Look Like Practically?

Dependence on God is not passive or abstract—it is an intentional, daily posture of the heart. In this episode, we shared several practical ways dependence shows up in everyday life:

  • Praying before acting, then leaving the outcome in God’s hands

  • Submitting to God’s Word over feelings, even when obedience is uncomfortable

  • Daily surrender of control, acknowledging we are not sufficient apart from Him

  • Trusting God in uncertainty, resting in who He is when clarity is lacking

  • Obedience without immediate results, remaining faithful even when progress feels unseen

  • Seeking God’s strength instead of our own, replacing “I’ve got this” with “Lord, I need You”

  • Responding rather than reacting, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide our words and actions

  • Living with open hands, holding plans, people, and possessions loosely

Each of these requires humility, patience, and a willingness to let God lead—even when the path forward feels unclear.

Choosing Trust Daily

Depending on God is a moment-by-moment choice. It looks like prayer instead of panic, obedience instead of control, trust instead of striving, and faith instead of fear.

It doesn’t grow overnight. Dependence deepens through practice, surrender, and time—often in seasons of refining when God is teaching us to rely on Him more fully.

If this episode resonated with you, know this: God is faithful. He has provided before, and He will do it again. Our call is not to figure everything out, but to trust the One who already holds it all.
