The Attributes of God – Part II

By Ashton McGraw & Chris Jaeger In The Light of Truth – A Podcast by Illuminate the Truth.

Welcome to In The Light of Truth, a podcast where biblical truth meets real life. Whether you’re new to the Bible or have studied it for years, this is a space for honest conversations about the struggles, joys, and peace we experience as followers of Christ. Walking with God isn’t always easy, but it’s always worth it. Let’s grow together in the light of truth.

The Attributes of God | Part II

In this second part of our series on the Attributes of God, Ashton and Chris continue exploring who God is — not only in His holiness, judgment, and eternality (covered in Part One), but now in His kindness, strength, compassion, mercy, and power.

These attributes are not abstract ideas. They shape how we walk through hardship, how we relate to others, and how we trust the God who knows us fully and loves us completely.

God Is Sovereign

“Our God is in the heavens; He does all that He pleases.” — Psalm 115:3

Sovereignty means God rules over everything — nothing surprises Him, nothing confuses Him, and nothing escapes His control. Even when we don’t understand our circumstances, He is weaving everything together for good.

Sometimes we need simple reminders: He is in control. As Philippians 4:6–7 teaches, we bring our requests to God, and then we leave them with Him. That is where peace comes from — not in knowing outcomes, but in knowing Him.

God Is Good

“Taste and see that the Lord is good.” — Psalm 34:8

God's goodness is not based on what He gives us; it is rooted in who He is. Everything He does flows from His perfect moral excellence.

Chris shared something refreshing: the biblical word good originally meant complete moral perfection. Our modern culture has watered the word down, turning “good” into “mediocre.” But biblically, “good” is profound — it is the very nature of God.

And when we experience Him personally, His goodness becomes unmistakable. Even in hardship, His goodness is working for our healing, maturity, and sanctification.

God Is Merciful

“His mercies are new every morning.” — Lamentations 3:22–23

Mercy means God does NOT give us what we deserve.

His compassion is active — forgiveness when we fail, patience when we struggle, and comfort when we hurt. Every sunrise is a reminder: we are here today because He is merciful.

As the Women’s Bible Study notes put it:

“Deserving mercy is a contradictory term.”

We don’t deserve mercy — but God pours it out anyway, abundantly and tenderly.

God Is Gracious

If mercy is not getting what we do deserve, grace is receiving what we don’t deserve.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith… it is the gift of God.” — Ephesians 2:8–9

Grace is the foundation of our salvation. We cannot earn it. We cannot work for it. God freely gives it through Christ.

When we truly understand grace, it softens our hearts toward others. It becomes easier to replace comparison with compassion, irritability with patience, and criticism with understanding.

We extend grace because He first extended grace to us.

God Is Omniscient (All-Knowing)

“His understanding is beyond measure.” — Psalm 147:5

God knows everything — not just our actions, but our motives, our hidden thoughts, our fears, and the things we don’t even understand about ourselves.

Sometimes He reveals our sin gradually, not because He’s holding out on us, but because of His grace. He sanctifies us slowly so we can learn, grow, and walk forward with Him.

We don’t have to fix ourselves. We confess, repent, and trust Him — and He does the transforming.

God Is Omnipotent (All-Powerful)

“Nothing is too hard for You.” — Jeremiah 32:17

The God who spoke the universe into existence is the same God who strengthens us through His Spirit. His infinite power is not distant or detached — it is active within His children.

He provides for the birds and lilies; how much more will He care for us? Even when life feels unstable, God's power sustains us.

In spiritual warfare, in suffering, in confusion — His power is greater than anything we face. Evil is no match for Him. Satan is on a leash. At Christ’s return, His enemies will fall by the mere breath of His mouth.

That is the power that holds us.

God Is Omnipresent (Everywhere)

God is not limited by time or space. He is with us on the mountaintops, in our darkest valleys, and in every quiet moment in between.

His presence means:

  • We are never alone.

  • We are never unseen.

  • We are never forgotten.

Even in grief, God draws near. He weeps with the brokenhearted and walks with His children through every moment of pain.

In Every Attribute, We See His Heart

Together, these attributes reveal a God who is not only mighty but deeply personal:

  • Sovereign enough to rule the universe

  • Good enough to trust

  • Merciful enough to forgive

  • Gracious enough to save

  • All-knowing enough to guide

  • All-powerful enough to sustain

  • Ever-present enough to comfort

This is the God who invites us to know Him.

Final Thoughts

Understanding the attributes of God shapes everything about following Him. It deepens our worship, strengthens our faith, and transforms how we love others.

As Ashton said so beautifully, these attributes are not just truths to learn — they are truths to live.

And as Chris reminded us, the more we understand who God is, the more we recognize how fully we can trust Him.

Let’s continue growing together — in His presence, in His truth, and in His incredible love.
