What Does it Mean to Be Spiritually Awake?

By Ashton McGraw & Chris Jaeger In The Light of Truth – A Podcast by Illuminate the Truth.

Welcome to In The Light of Truth, a podcast where biblical truth meets real life. Whether you’re new to the Bible or have studied it for years, this is a space for honest conversations about the struggles, joys, and peace we experience as followers of Christ. Walking with God isn’t always easy, but it’s always worth it. Let’s grow together in the light of truth.

What Does it Mean to Be Spiritually Awake?

Jesus’ Call: “Stay Awake”

In Mark 13:33–37, Jesus warns His disciples to stay awake four times. When God repeats something, we should pay attention.

Being awake isn’t about predicting the exact time of Christ’s return—it’s about being ready. That readiness looks like:

  • Obedience to God’s Word

  • Living out His commandments

  • Loving our neighbors

  • Making disciples that make disciples

It’s a daily call to live with alertness, faithfulness, and urgency.

Why It Matters

The truth is, none of us know the hour of Christ’s return—or even the number of our own days. When we hear of someone’s passing, our first thought should be: Did they know the Lord? That urgency should move us toward sharing Christ with others.

Being awake means we don’t fall into spiritual laziness, compromise, or lukewarm faith. Revelation 3:16 is sobering: “Because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”

Instead, we’re called to be sober-minded, fully devoted, and on fire for Jesus.

Awake Living: What It Looks Like

Being awake is not about following rules—it’s about love.

  • Abiding in the Word – We can’t stay awake apart from Scripture. The enemy wants us distracted, but God equips us when we press into His truth.

  • Walking in Grace – We all sin, but God’s grace brings freedom, joy, and peace.

  • Bearing Fruit – As we’re sanctified, the Holy Spirit produces patience, kindness, love, and self-control in us.

  • Witnessing Boldly – Now is not the time to shrink back. It’s the time to stand bold in love and truth.

Practical Rhythms to Stay Awake

Awake faith starts in the home. Some simple, intentional habits can anchor us:

  • Family worship after dinner – Sing a hymn, read Scripture, and pray together. Even if it feels awkward at first, the Lord delights in it.

  • Daily devotional routines – Use tools like the Bible app, listen to Scripture in the car, or pray as a family before bed.

  • Worship in the everyday – Play praise music while driving or doing chores. Fill your environment with reminders of God’s goodness.

These small rhythms equip us to live awake and ready—not just for ourselves, but to shine Christ’s lightAe to others.

A Call to Boldness

The times we’re living in make it clear: we can’t be half-hearted. We need bold, awake faith that points people to Jesus. Yes, the world feels heavy and uncertain. But that shouldn’t drive us to fear—it should move us to action.

So the question is: How will you press in? How will you live awake?

Maybe it’s strengthening your personal prayer life. Maybe it’s starting family worship after dinner. Maybe it’s simply choosing to share Jesus with a co-worker or neighbor.

Wherever you’re at, the call is the same: Stay awake. Fix your eyes on Jesus. Be ready, because He is coming.
